The Flat Frame : Gear Guide

You do not need specialised, expensive street photography gear to join this masterclass. Because The Flat Frame is about compression, geometry, and minimalism, the camera gear you already own-including modern smartphones is likely the perfect tool for the job.

  • Any Camera Body: Whether you shoot on a high-end full-frame DSLR or a modern mirrorless system, as long as you can control shutter speed and exposure compensation manually, you are ready.

  • Any Prime or Zoom Lens: Traditional street photographers use wide angles to get close to crowds. We use whatever lens you already own-whether it is a 35mm prime, a 50mm prime, or a standard kit lens. The “compression” in our style doesn’t come from a zoom ring; it comes from your vantage point. I will teach you how to position your body, step back, and use natural geometry to flatten the space between your subject and the architecture.

  • Smartphone Photographers: Modern smartphones are fully capable of achieving the Flat Frame look. If you are shooting on a phone, we will utilise your device’s dedicated optical lens to compress architectural lines, alongside manual exposure apps to lock down your highlights and shadows.

  • No Tripods Needed: This is an active, hand-held moving workshop. We will be intentionally using camera movement to create abstract motion blur. Leave the heavy tripods at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

ONE : I have never shot street photography before and I am anxious about photographing strangers. Is this workshop right for me?

Yes. This workshop is specifically designed to eliminate that exact anxiety. Our architectural philosophy does not involve confronting people or taking close-up portraits. we focus on silhouettes, reflections, and light, meaning you can shoot the entire session completely inconspicuously.

TWO : What level of technical camera knowledge do i need?

You need basic understanding of how to change your camera’s shutter speed and aperture in Manual or Semi-Manual modes. You do not need to be fast. We set our exposure parameters deliberately and wait for the scene to come to us.

THREE : What happens if it rains on the day of the workshop?

We shoot anyway. In abstract urban photography, rain is our best asset. Wet asphalt, puddles, and mist provide clean, high-contrast reflections that make flattening the frame significantly easier.please dress appropriately for the weather.
